What is International Women’s Day and when did it start?

International Women’s Day (IWD) happens on March 8th every year.

First, it was called National Women’s Day in the United States in February 1909. Then, in 1910, Clara Zetkin suggested having an international day for women’s rights at a conference in Denmark. That’s how International Women’s Day started.

All the women from 17 countries, including Finland’s first three women MPs, agreed to International Women’s Day. It happened for the first time in March 1911 and then on March 8th from 1913. The UN started celebrating it in 1975 and in 1996, they had the first theme: ‘Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future’.

International Women’s Day started in the early 1900s when women were fighting for better rights and conditions. It officially began in 1911 after Clara Zetkin suggested having a special day for women’s rights at a conference. Since then, it has become a worldwide celebration and protest for gender equality. Every year has a different theme, like “Break the Bias” (2022), “Choose to Challenge” (2021) and “Each for Equal” (2020).

What’s the purpose of International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is an important day for women to talk about their challenges and successes. Women have had to fight for their rights, like the right to vote and fair treatment at work. On this day, women come together to tell their stories, support each other, and ask for changes from governments and organizations.

In the past few years, International Womens Day has become even more important. Movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp have shown how common sexual harassment and assault are. International Women’s Day is now a strong call for women everywhere to speak up against violence and demand big changes.

What’s the main focus of International Women’s Day this year?

This year, there are two main ideas for International Women’s Day. The IWD website’s theme is #InspireInclusion, while the UN’s official theme is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’. Also, UN Women and the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs give an annual update on how things are going with reaching Goal 5 for Sustainable Development.

On International Women’s Day, women deserve to be celebrated and appreciated worldwide, with special recognition for their achievements and perhaps even indulging in some well-deserved shopping.
